Odom’s season to come

Lakers media day (an opportunity for interviews with various media outlets the day before training camp starts) is set for Monday, but Lamar Odom got his personal business out of the way by discussing Thursday the death of his infant son, Jayden. Before Odom even settled in his seat, the sadness in his eyes and voice threatened to spill over.

He said the support from fans has been “amazing,” but it’s only logical that he said it has helped just “a little bit.” Odom mentioned that his son’s death might wind up making him a better player because it has made him more careful and thoughtful about everything. On the other hand, they say it’s never good for a player to get too far from the game in the offseason, and Odom certainly has been away — with good reason, of course.

My article for the Register tomorrow will delve into this situation and how trying it obviously is for Odom on a personal level. Here, let’s look at it from a more basketball-oriented perspective: Odom has always been somewhat too emotional on the court, hurting his focus. Will this make him more or less of a professional? It’ll be interesting to see how he fares this season when he should be better than ever in the basketball sense. Can he find some solace on the court and play with more even-keel determination instead of hot-and-cold intensity?

Hinrich Excited About Two Squads

Sam Smith of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE writes, "Kirk Hinrich and his USA Basketball teammates are scheduled to leave Friday for Guangzhou, China. Their itinerary also features stops in Hong Kong and Seoul before winding up in Sapporo and Saitama, Japan, for the World Basketball Championships. As much as the Bulls guard was looking forward to helping the U.S. team earn a pass to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing by winning the world championships, he couldn’t keep his mind off Chicago."
